Real Estate Degree Review Program

The Appraiser Qualifications Board (AQB) of The Appraisal Foundation has established a review program for college degrees in real estate to provide students with a path to receive credit for the Required Core Curriculum in the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria (Criteria). Instead of utilizing a course-by-course approval process the AQB will review a college/university’s graduate, undergraduate, or associate degree in real estate to determine how much of the Required Core Curriculum is met by graduates of the degree program and will identify areas where additional course work will be required (the 15-Hour National USPAP Course is one possible example).

Highlights of the program include the following. Read our Fact Sheet (below) for more highlights and information:
  • “Retroactive” approval - the program will be approved retroactively back to the date in which the current program was established
  • Graduates of approved programs may receive up to 300 hours (based on the degree content) of qualifying education credit toward a real property appraiser credential

State Regulators

Under this program, the AQB analyzes real estate related degrees to determine how the education required to obtain a degree can be applied to the Required Core Curriculum in the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. The results of the review are published for state appraiser regulatory agencies to use when reviewing the educational qualifications of applicants that hold such degrees.

Colleges/Universities

Schools that participate in this degree review program offer their students a pathway straight into a meaningful career after college, at no additional cost to the university, and students graduate with a real estate related degree that gives them a significant portion of the educational requirements needed to advance into the appraisal profession. Approvals last for 3 years and programs can be renewed every 3 years provided no changes are made to the program. If changes are made (such as the addition or removal of a course) to the Degree during the approval period, the AQB must be notified, and a review will be conducted by a member of the AQB to ensure equivalency has been met. If you would like your degree to be reviewed, please read the policies and then fill out the application

Students

AQB approval of a degree in real estate is not a guarantee of acceptance by any individual state appraiser regulatory agency. Individual jurisdictions have rights to establish criteria that are greater or more stringent than that established by the AQB. As a result, a state regulatory agency may elect to not accept the AQB’s analysis of a college’s degree program. Applicants considering entering a degree program in real estate should make sure to check with their respective state appraiser regulatory agency prior to enrolling to determine that particular jurisdiction’s policies pertaining to this issue.

List of AQB Approved Degrees in Real Estate

Below is a full list of approved college/university degree programs. Click on each heading to see the full list of programs.

Once you click on each heading below, a table will show up. Within each table below there are three columns.
  • Column 1 (College/University) is the name of the college that houses the approved degree.
  • Column 2 (Degree) is the name of the degree that was approved. This is hyperlinked to the degree webpage on the college's site.
  • Column 3 (Approval Dates) are the dates in which the program is approved. These dates are hyperlinked to the approval letter for the degree with those specific dates.
Note for Alumni: To find if your degree was approved for when you obtained the degree, make sure there is a match for the year you graduated and the year of approval. For example, if you graduated with a listed degree in 2015, you want to make sure 2015 is within the range of approved years. You can then click on the approval letter to be sure you have taken any elective courses that are required for these hours. Students must take the entire degree and any elective courses to qualify. Once you have verified that the information in the approval letter matches your degree, contact your state regulatory agency to submit your coursework for credit.

Note for State Regulators: You will notice some colleges/universities have multiple approval dates with no lapse. For example: Texas A&M University's Master of Real Estate has 2 approval dates: 2004-2015 and 2015-2024. This occurs when a college/university's degree program changes in some way (a course is added or dropped, an elective is added, a course substantially changes). This likely changes the amount of approved hours as well.

Please note: Some of these programs may require specific electives to be taken in order to receive credit. Please check the approval letters for more information.
